Himalayan Giants from Sandakphu Summit
The majestic Himalayan panorama from Sandakphu at golden hour - four of the world's five highest peaks visible from this vantage point on the Singalila Ridge.
The Story Behind
Standing at 3,636 meters on the highest point in West Bengal, I had one of those rare moments where geography becomes almost unbelievable. From this single vantage point on the Singalila Ridge, I could see four of the five highest mountains on Earth - Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu - all lined up along the horizon.
The October evening light was doing its work, painting the snow-covered peaks in shades of gold and pink. To the west, Everest stood unmistakable even at this distance, the highest point on the planet catching the last rays of sun. Closer and more dominant was Kanchenjunga, the third highest, its massive bulk forming the famous Sleeping Buddha silhouette that draws trekkers here from around the world.
Three days of hiking along the India-Nepal border had led to this moment. The Sandakphu-Phalut trek isn't about conquering peaks - it's about witnessing them. And from this remote corner of Darjeeling, the Himalayas put on a show that no photograph can fully capture. But I tried anyway.
