Begnas Lake, Pokhara
Begnas Lake stretches out calm and still against the foothills near Pokhara, Nepal — the second-largest lake in the Pokhara Valley.
The Story Behind
Begnas Lake is a freshwater lake located about 15 kilometres east of Pokhara in the Kaski District of Nepal. It sits at around 650 metres above sea level and covers 3.28 square kilometres, making it the second-largest lake in the Pokhara Valley after Phewa Lake. Unlike its busier neighbour, Begnas remains quieter and less commercialised — surrounded by green hills, farmland, and small settlements along its banks.
On clear days, the Annapurna and Manaslu mountain ranges are visible from the lake, their snow-capped peaks reflecting off the still water in the early morning. Wooden rowboats are available for hire, and locals offer rides across the lake or to the far shore where trails lead up into the surrounding hills. The lake is also known for its freshwater fish, and small restaurants along the eastern bank serve fried fish straight from the water. The best months to visit are October to May, when the skies are clearest and the mountain views are at their best.
