A Foggy Morning in Tindu

Tindu, Thanchi, Bandarban, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh

A foggy morning on the Sangu River at Tindu boat ghat in Bandarban. We were loading up to head upriver to Nafakhum, and the boats and hills were still half-lost in the fog.

The Story Behind

We were up before light at Tindu, loading the boats for the run upriver to Nafakhum. The Sangu was dead calm that early, mist sitting right on the water, and the hills across the river were barely there — just soft grey shapes behind the fog.

The country boats were already lined up at the ghat, engines mounted on the back, painted red and green and stacked with gear. While we waited I stood on the bank and watched the mist move. There's a particular quiet to the Sangu at that hour, before the engines start up and break it.

I shot this on the X-T30 at 55mm, ISO 640 to hold a shutter in the low dawn light. A few minutes later we pushed off, and the whole scene — the boats, the mist, the still water — was behind us as we headed up toward the falls.
