Into the Mist: Suspension Bridge on Goechala Trek, Sikkim
A suspension bridge disappears into the misty forest on the first day of the Goechala trek. The path from Yuksom to Sachen winds through dense Himalayan jungle, crossing bridges that feel like thresholds into another world.
The Story Behind
The Goechala trek begins with a lesson in patience. From Yuksom, the old capital of Sikkim, the trail plunges into forest so thick the sky becomes a rumor. And then you reach the first bridge.
There is something about suspension bridges in the mountains that makes you pause. The metal walkway stretches ahead, the mist swallowing whatever lies on the other side. Fallen leaves from the autumn trees collect on the planks. The forest presses in from both sides, green and dense and indifferent to your presence.
This was day one—Yuksom to Sachen, seven and a half kilometers that felt like a proper introduction to what lay ahead. The bridges here are not the vine-and-branch kind the locals once built. These are sturdy, modern, but they still demand something from you. A willingness to step forward when you cannot see where the path leads.
I remember standing here for a moment, camera in hand, letting the mist settle around me. The Prek Chu river murmured somewhere below. Ahead was Sachen, then Tshoka, then Dzongri, and eventually the face of Kanchenjunga itself. But right then, there was only this bridge, this forest, and the quiet understanding that the journey had truly begun.
